ˇ@ˇ@Kaoshiung airport was built at the Japanese rule era. After Taiwan was retroceded, Our government takes it as the training base for Air Force. At 1965, the Civil Aeronauticd Administration took over the management of it in order to develop the air transporting business in the southern Taiwan, and established the Kaoshiung Airport. Then it was expended and started to run the business of domestic civil aviation and cargoes transportation. Due to the need of international market, it started to run the international cargo business on April, 1969, and was elevated to ˇ§Kaoshiung International Airportˇ¨ at July 1st, 1969. Follow-up, it started the international travel business on October, 1972.
ˇ@ˇ@At the beginning of foundation, the business didn't raise much, so the equipments were enough. However, since Taiwan government practice the ˇ§Open Airˇ¨ Policy at the end of 1987, new airlines and airline companies increases one after another, so the civil aviation business develop rapidly. Meanwhile, the Taiwan government's opening up of the mainland China visiting to citizens and the more and more serious Land traffic in Taiwan makes the business growing rate up to 30%. In order to handle the growing business in the future, the CAA again draft the expanding plan, and build five more Apron Parking lots and one main runway at the year of 1986 and 1987. The Phase II of expanding plan starts on January 1991. Among them, the International Terminal building is finished and start using on January 11th, 1997, and the Cargo plane shed, car parking lots, overpass, pedestrian bridge, and maintenance shed are already finished.
The total area of Kaohsiung International Airport is 244
hectare, about 1/5 big of CKS International Airport. The Domestic Terminal
Building, Control Tower, and other equipments for guiding navigation are
finished on May, 1972. It has gone through some constructions and then become
what it is today. KHH Airport is now the first International Airport which runs
two Terminal Building, Domestic and International airlines, in Taiwan. The
finish and opening of new International Terminal Building improves the
equipments a lot. The Domestic Terminal Building is now on the pre-preparation
procedure of dismantling for rebuild. The estimated time to finish rebuild
construction is five years. Once if it finished, the Internationalization of
southern Taiwan would go into another landmark. |
