Kaohsiung International Airport received champion in Green Airport Recognition
Kaohsiung International Airport has implemented water efficiency project since 2015, and the performance has been recognized as Green Airport by Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific and awarded Platinum in the less than 15 million passengers per annum category.
In order to minimize aviation’s impact on the environment, the Green Airports Recognition was established by ACI in 2017 and chose a specific environment aspect as the theme of recognition each year. There are 113 members operating 602 airports in 49 countries in Asia-Pacific participate in the “Green Airport Recognition 2020”. The theme for this year’s recognition is “Water Management”, and Kaohsiung International Airport chose “Water Efficiency Management” as the project.
Kaohsiung International Airport indicates that water efficiency management has been regarded as a major policy and target. Since 2015, Kaohsiung International Airport set the Water Efficiency Management Committee, and has significant performance in these years which showing a 7.2% decrease in water consumption and leading to a reduction of 20.1% in the total water consumption per passenger.
In order to enhance the water efficiency, Kaohsiung International Airport regularly inspects the performance of water-saving plan, performs pipelines leakage detection and water pumps efficiency evaluation. Kaohsiung International Airport had replaced all old toilets and faucets with water-saving toilets and induced faucets (with water-saving gasket) in 2016, and the old air conditioning cooling towers were replaced by new type cooling tower which significantly improves the operation efficiency.
In addition, Kaohsiung International Airport has wastewater recycling equipment to recycle wastewater for irrigation or road cleaning. Meanwhile Kaohsiung International Airport engaged with diverse stakeholders, such as providing water-saving awareness training for staffs and tenants, and post water-saving promotion posters to propagate the concept of water-saving to passengers. Kaohsiung International Airport positively implement “Water Efficiency Management” and is received green airport recognition by ACI.
